CANDY BOX Dance Festival is an annual, eclectic gathering of performances, work-in-progress showing, masterclasses, and choreographic discussions. A one-of-a-kind event in the Twin Cities, the 5th annual festival features a range of aesthetics and choreographic voices to offer a diverse array of treats!
Masterclasses take place Monday through Friday 4:00-5:15PM – Choose from a single ticket or a 5-class pass to take multiple masterclasses!
JULY 12 Annika Hansen and Abigail Whitmore: Class will be a time to move and groove together. It will include a squishy, feel-good warmup, improv scores to get you out of your head, and some phrase work to play with choice making. The intention is to bring our awareness to a sense of play and curiosity, and hopefully move through stuck patterns.
JULY 13 Judith Holo Shuǐ Xiān: In this class, I hope to lead folks through some scores that have been essential to the two years of my practice, and share in group dialogue about the experiences that being inside of those scores arises. My interest in sharing these is to hear the range of ancestral/historical/personal connections that modes of movement can create and remind us of. The class will be split roughly 50/50 between moving and reflection, and will hold witnessing and observations of each other’s journeys through the score as a point of deepening our movement analysis.
JULY 14 Pedro Pablo: We will journey into permeabilities inhabiting multiple states. We will access our bodies, voices, imaginations to build and transform through our time together. I think of this as a sharing of my creative process, opening materials, opening pathways for movement to lead us into new spaces.
JULY 15 Slo Dance Company: This class will feature Laura’s budding exploration of the “Slo practice”. The Slo practice is an approach to movement from a lens of slowness and heightened listening. Participants can expect to land and locate themselves in movement through building awareness of relationships–to self, space, sound, and each other. The practice will grow into movement conversations with improvisation, play and phrase work, all centered around seeking pleasure and joy in the body.
JULY 16 HIJACK: Do what we do to get ready for tonight’s show. Let’s exercise our imaginations, abdominals, eyeballs. Shake off your day and warm up to watch with somatics, composition, calisthenics, appreciation, opening. Look each other in the eye. Warm up HIJACK.
