ARENA DANCES

Emily Michaels King – Happy Hour Artist

Emily Michaels King is a performing artist based in St. Paul, Minnesota exploring sensory and embodied engagement in live experiences through movement, multimedia, and visual art. Her work has been presented at the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie Theater, and the Southern Theater, among others. Emily is known for her collaged solo performances, including her award winning show MAGIC GIRL, and her multimedia pieces DIGITAL and IN PERSON. She is also part of the collaborative duo E/D (LEWIS/CLARK, ANIMUS, THE SHOW). Pairing minimalism and subtlety with cacophony and bared irreverence, Emily’s works employ the lush landscape of the inner world and the power of unapologetic vulnerability. They combine movement with text, graphics, sound, and sculpture to focus on themes of self discovery and reclamation, womanhood, and bold, or supremely delicate, expressions of personal truth. www.emilymichaelsking.com

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

When I was in first grade, Ben Channey and I got detention for writing our names on our worksheets in Neon Elmer’s glue. Now, I want to squirt that shit everywhere. I think I want to smash a cake on it. I think I want to blow it up. I think I want to tell you everything. But like really, all of this could change. What if I just feel like an apple blossom then? It’s a lot of pressure.

In this in-process performance, ELECTRIC, Emily Michaels King uses her unique blend of movement, text, and bold personal revelations to explore divulgence and the instinct to knock the tower down.

IF YOU WERE A TYPE OF CANDY, WHAT TYPE OF CANDY WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

Sour Brite Crawlers. A little BAM! A little visceral. An experience for sure. Plus the perfect soft gummy chew inside.
